Japanese Vocabulary Maker helps you understand difficult Japanese text, research unfamiliar words, and build vocabulary lists, all from any Japanese content in seconds. Choose your input method:
  • URL: paste any Japanese webpage or a direct link to a PDF file
  • Image (OCR): upload a photo of a book page, manga panel, or any printed Japanese text
  • Paste Text: paste Japanese text directly to analyze it
  • File: upload an EPUB ebook, plain text file (.txt), subtitle file (.srt / .vtt), or audio file (.mp3, .m4a, .ogg, .wav, .flac)
  • Audio URL: paste a link to a podcast episode or audio file for automatic transcription and instant vocabulary lists
  • YouTube: paste a YouTube link to build a vocab list from its captions and stream it in sync with the video: each word highlights as it's spoken, with adjustable playback speed (great for listening practice and shadowing)
  • Anime Subs: search an anime by title to pull its Japanese subtitles from Jimaku and build a vocab list from the dialogue, or upload your own subtitle file (.srt / .ass / .vtt)
For every word you get its hiragana reading, romaji, part of speech, and definition, making it easy to research words you don't know and go through even the most difficult text with confidence. Each entry links to Jisho and lets you jump back to the word's context in the original text. Classical Japanese is supported: historical kana (ゐ, ゑ) and Aozora Bunko texts are handled correctly, with original characters shown in context.

Use Stream Vocab to step through the content phrase by phrase with synchronized audio playback, which is great for deep reading or listening comprehension practice.

Kanji Vocabulary Lists let you build a vocabulary list from one or more kanji characters. Enter kanji separated by spaces or commas (e.g. 食 飲) and click Create Kanji Vocab List. A list will be created ranked by how frequently each word appears in real Japanese text, complete with readings, romaji, part of speech, and definitions. You can filter by JLPT level, export to Anki or Quizlet, or take a quiz to practice the words.
