Japanese Vocab Maker is a free tool for building Japanese vocabulary lists. Most of it
works without an account and without knowing anything about you. This page describes
everything the site stores.
If you don't have an account
Using the site without signing in, we store:
The text or URL you submit, for as long as it takes to extract the vocabulary and return it. Extracted lists you explicitly save are kept so their share links keep working.
Words looked up on the Word Usage pages, so those pages can be cached and listed. This is the word only, not who looked it up.
Basic web-server logs: IP address, browser user-agent, and requested page. Used to keep the service running and to tell real visitors from crawlers. Rotated and discarded.
A short-lived page cookie (pvt) that lets us count one visit as one visit. It contains a random value, holds nothing about you, and expires on its own.
If you create an account
We store the following piece of information:
Your email address: used as your login name.
Your password, hashed. We cannot read it or recover it.
An optional display name, shown in the top bar.
Your quiz results: which quizzes you took, your scores, and the questions and answers, so you can see what you got wrong.
Your sessions: a random token in a cookie named sid, so you stay signed in for 30 days. The token is stored on our side only as a hash.
What we never do
We don't sell or rent your data to anyone.
We don't share your account or quiz data with third parties.
Third-party services
Some features pass your input to an outside service: fetching a page you
asked us to read, retrieving YouTube captions or anime subtitles, searching the web when
you build a topic list, or transcribing audio you upload. Those requests contain what you
submitted, never your email or account details. Definitions come from the
JMdict
dictionary files and are served from our own copy.
Your data is yours
Download it: My account → “Download my data” gives you everything we hold for your account as a JSON file.
Delete it: My account → “Delete account” removes your account, your sessions and every saved quiz immediately and permanently. There is no soft-delete and no backup copy of it kept for later.
If this policy changes in a way that affects what we store about account holders, the
date at the top will change and the new terms will be described here.
