Classical Japanese texts written before 1946 use 旧仮名遣い (historical kana orthography), a system that includes obsolete characters like ゐ and ゑ, verb endings such as 〜ふ and 〜ひ, and spelling conventions like やう for the modern よう. A postwar government reform mandated writing Japanese as it sounds in contemporary speech, but many publishers continued printing prewar classics in their original spelling for decades afterward.
Today, about 37% of the Aozora Bunko digital library still carries the original historical kana, with most of those titles having no modern kana companion edition on the site. This converter fetches any Aozora Bunko URL and applies the standard conversion rules so you can read the text in familiar modern kana.
Just put in a URL to an Aozora Bunko story in classic kana and click "Convert".
(Stories in classical kana on other websites may also work, but this tool was primarily tested on Aozora Bunko stories.)

Japanese spelling went through a major change in 1946, after World War II. Before that, written Japanese used an older spelling system called 旧仮名遣い that had been around for about a thousand years. Any story or book written before that year, like anything by Akutagawa or Soseki, uses the old system. It looks mostly like modern Japanese but has some consistent differences that make it tricky to read if you don't know the rules.
About 37% of Aozora Bunko (Japan's main free ebook site for public domain works) is still in old kana, roughly 7,200 texts. Most of those don't have a modern kana version available, so a converter is useful.
1. ゐ→い and ゑ→え
Two kana that no longer exist in modern Japanese. ゐ (wi) became い, ゑ (we) became え.
2. は行 verb endings: ふ→う, ひ→い, へ→え
Verbs and adjectives that ended in は行 kana now end in the plain vowel.
3. Long vowel spellings: やう→よう, さう→そう, かう→こう
Words that sound like よう or そう were spelled やう or さう in old texts.
4. Volitional and presumptive: だらう→だろう
The old ending だらう (roughly "probably") became だろう.
5. Yotsu gana: づ→ず, ぢ→じ
Classical Japanese treated these as separate sounds. Modern Japanese merged them.
6. Gemination: plain つ→small っ in certain words
Some words used a full-size つ where modern Japanese uses the small っ.
Examples from 羅生門 and 杜子春 by 芥川龍之介, and 高瀬舟 by 森鴎外, all via Aozora Bunko (public domain).
The classical kana converter uses these rules as well as many other differences between classical and modern Japanese in order to produce a text similar to modern Japanese.
Note: AI / LLMs are not used during this conversion process, which is built from a series of well-defined hardcoded rules.
